Thelma Buzzard, a prominent watercolor artist, recently celebrated her 90th birthday.

PASSION, creativity and enthusiasm radiates from Thelma Buzzard, a prominent local artists, who celebrated her 90th birthday on Monday, 7 July, as she talks to Northglen News in a private interview.

The Durban North resident, who is best known for her beautiful watercolor paintings, said she has been interested in art all her life. “I was always the artist in our family. During family holidays I would be the one with my pencil and paper, sketching anything that inspired me,” she said.

Most of her art is inspired by her second passion, nature. “I especially love painting people, flowers, birds and other wildlife,” said Thelma. Many of her magnificent artwork has been exhibited in South Africa, London and Hong Kong.

The talented artist has also dabbled in other forms of art, including miniature art, oil painting and acrylics. “I enjoy pushing the boundaries, learning and inventing new ways of doing art,” she said.

Thelma has attributed her longevity to her artistry. “Art is a wonderful thing. It has exposed me to so many wonderful people and inspired me to travel. It is also an activity that heals one’s soul, and gives one break from all the stresses of life. Many other artists have also said that art has prolonged their lives significantly,”said Thelma.

It is one of the many reasons that she has opted to teach others of the joy that can be found in art. She has been offering art lessons and conducting worldwide workshops for the last 35 years. “I love sharing my talent and passion . It is rewarding to see others benefiting from my knowledge. Time and time again I have witnessed my students come to their lessons with all of their worries, and then when they leave it is like they are in another world,” she said.
