Mystery surrounds local businessman’s death

Bizarre circumstances surround the death of a local businessman in Verulam.

AN ABANDONED vehicle found on the R102 last night, between the King Shaka International Airport and Verulam, lead patrollers of the Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) to the body of Mohit Maharaj, a well-known local businessman.

According to RUSA’s Facebook page , the patrollers found the gold Mercedes Benz near Drift Temple. The vehicle was reportedly unlocked, the lights were left on and one of the tyres were punctured.

The vehicle was identified by a second reaction officer. RUSA proceeded to Maharaj’s residence at approximately 2.55am, after authorities failed to make contact with anyone at his home.

Maharaj’s body was discovered lying near his garage door, with a black cloth tied over his face. Initial inspection suggested that he was strangled. RUSA paramedics declared him dead at the scene. Both the garage door and driveway gates were open.

It is unclear at this stage if the victim was involved in a hijacking or home robbery.

Northglen News was unable to get comment from the Verulam SAPS or RUSA.
