Live hand grenade found in Glen Hills

Malacca Road residents made a dangerous discovery on Friday.

RESIDENTS of the Malacca Road informal settlement were blown away when they discovered a hand grenade that was wrapped in newspaper and dumped near the informal settlement on Friday.

According to the Greenwood Park Community Policing Forum’s chairman, Robin Candy, residents reported their find to the SAPS on Saturday morning.

The grenade was found by scavenging residents of the settlement  inside a bag and was wrapped in newspaper, which was dumped at the intersection of Ryde Place and Malacca Road in Glen Hills. The dangerous device was found amongst rubbish.

A specialist unit was dispatched to handle the grenade, who detonated it on site. The bomb squad dug a hole before detonating the device.

“A policeman on site told me it was most likely a Russian-made hand grenade,” Candy said.

Candy commended the residents for reporting their find to police.

Dumping at this intersection, according to Candy has always been a problem: “It’s mostly residents from the suburbs who dump at this site and they are most likely to blame, but we have no way of knowing where the grenade came from.”

Allison Alan-Brown commented on the CPF’s Facebook page: “Where can such a device get into the suburbs? Hope the police are investigating…”
