Man killed after being followed from bank

Man shot through car window outside Springfield Park business after making sizable withdrawal from bank in city's CBD.

A 54-YEAR-OLD man was shot and killed outside his work today by armed robbers who had followed him from the Standard Bank on Kingsmead Boulevard in the city’s CBD.  The victim and a work colleague had withdrawn R40 000 from the bank and were attacked as they turned into their business premises on Rochdale Road, Springfield Park.

According to Col Mbongeni Mngadi, from Greenwood Park SAPS, the men were followed by four armed men driving a white Ford Focus.

“One of the suspects approached the vehicle and fired a shot through the window fatally injuring the driver. The passenger who attempted to flee was pulled to the ground while the men ransacked the car and made off with R40 000,” he said.

Mngadi could not say whether police were investigating if there was an informant at the bank who may have tipped off the suspects.

This is the third robbery where residents were followed from the bank after making a withdrawal. Two weeks ago armed men opened fire on a scrap metal worker on Acutt Avenue.

He had withdrawn R6 000 from the Standard Bank in Briardene when he noticed three suspects walking towards him. Without warning the men opened fire on him. The worker, though shaken, miraculously escaped injury, with many of the bullets fired slamming into his work bakkie.

The men made off with the money.
