80-year-old held down, bitten and robbed by armed men

Durban North granny traumatised and shell shocked by terrifying ordeal.

A SIMPLE walk to the supermarket turned into a nightmare for a Durban North granny who was not only robbed by four men, but bitten by one of the suspects who was armed with a knife. The incident occurred on Tuesday (27 May) at about 1pm on Lynton Place. Yvonne Kirstein (80) who regularly walks to the SPAR supermarket was pulled into the back seat of a white vehicle, believed to be a Citi golf and held down by armed assailants.

The grandmother was held down while one of the suspects, who was in the front passenger seat, ran around the car and held a knife to her neck demanding valuables. The knife wielding suspect even resorted to biting her fingers to get at her wedding ring. Bits of  Kirsten’s finger skin were also torn off during the attack.

The suspects made off with the octogenarian’s wedding ring, watch, handbag and her empty shopping bag.

Yvonne’s daughter Jackie Neimand, said her mother was extremely traumatised and shell shocked by the terrifying ordeal.

“This was just so horrific and brazen. She has been to the doctors for her tetanus shot because the man who bit her tore a bit of skin off her finger,” she explained.

“My mother said the men drove past her and pulled up on the pavement. They then grabbed her and dragged her into the backseat of the vehicle. She screamed for help but no one was around. Two of the men held her down while the man with the knife began taking her valuables.”

The suspects eventually pushed Kirstein out of the car and drove off.

“I’m so thankful my mother is fine. There have been so many cases where people have lost their lives for less. She is recovering and has spent most of today resting,” Neimand said.

She added the family had tried to keep the old lady busy yesterday to keep her mind off things.
