Capt’n Crash ready for Derby bout

Intensity, passion and all-round physicality is what you can expect at this weekends Roller Derby bout.

IT’S the first scrimmage of the bout, Amy Bennett better known to her team mates as Capt’n Crash, lines up, there are bodies all around her like a crowded bus, that you would normally try and avoid. But with steely determination Capt’n Crash holds her own in the crowd of other Amazonian warriors with equally impressive monikers, Rusty Cutlass, Julia Seize-Her and Kick-Azz Jackson to name a few, and swoops in like an arrow and connects with the opposition.

There’s something delightful about a good block, you are compelled to wince at the person on the receiving end, currently on their butt, and there’s the other half of you saying that was insanely awesome.

Welcome to the world of Roller Derby, replete with colourful outfits (fishnets and tutus), otherworldly and a sport in which skaters simulate bumper cars. Since its inception, Durban Derby has unearthed a pot of gold when it comes to skating talent, held its first much anticipated bout and had a increasing number of willing participants ensuring the sports longevity in KwaZulu-Natal.

Northglen News recently caught up with Amy, as she prepares for the KZN league’s second bout. A fashion designer by day, the Durban North resident representing the MissFits, said she is looking forward to the match-up against Eve’s Kanevils.

“After the first bout in November last year, I think people are wiser to what the sport offers. In the first bout, the first few minutes were filled with subdued applause and once the crowd got into it, they became rapturous.

“There’s some very healthy competition between the two teams. They are worthy opponents but we have been training extremely hard and we are going out there to make ourselves and our supporters proud,” she enthused.

There’s also a matter of the first South African squad gearing up for the Roller Derby World Cup in Texas in December. Amy who is part of the Team ZA squad hopes to make the final cut but insists she is putting all her focus on Saturday’s bout.
