Some resolution for abandoned house

The owner of the abandoned house in uMngeni Park and the municipality has finally taken action to clean-up part of the derelict house.

THERE is some light at the end of the tunnel for residents of Kiaat Place – the abandoned house, which was a haven for vagrants, rats and snakes, has finally been cleaned up. After battling to get the owner to clean up for more than a year, municipal officials and the owner of the house helped clear away the rubble strewn all over the yard.

The overgrown grass was cut back and the stagnant pool water, where thousands of mosquito larvae floated on the surface, was also drained.

Stuart Harris, one of the neighbours said he was happy that action had finally been taken to clear away the rubble, but expressed concern over the empty shell of the house. “We are glad the cosmetic changes have been made and I hope in time, the shell of the house is maintained,” he said.

Harris praised the municipality’s health unit for their hard work in trying to get the owner to clean up the abandoned house.

A municipal official from the health unit, who did not want to be named said council struggles with neglected properties. “I hope this story has a happy ending. We will never give up trying to bring relief to neighbours. Unfortunately, there is nothing the health unit can do about the remaining structure. It’s now a security issue as criminals can scale the walls and hide within,” he said.
