Police clamp down on prostitution

Local police take on increasing problem of prostitution in Riverside area.

GREENWOOD Park Police have have their hands full with complaints about the influx of vagrants and prostitutes in the Riverside area.

One such complaint came from a mother who said she saw several suspected prostitutes along Riverside Road recently while walking with her children. The problem is so bad that residents have called on police to remove prostitutes and vagrants from the Durban North area.

Heading the community’s calls for action, the Greenwood Park Police Station and the station’s community policing forum (CPF) clamped down on prostitution and vagrancy during a raid of the Riverside area recently. According to Lt Elvis Naidoo from the Greenwood Park Police Station, six suspected prostitutes, aged between 34 and 40, were arrested on Riverside Road. “We’ve seen an increase of prostitution in the area since eThekwini Municipality undertook to remove vagrants from the Durban central area.

It would seem as though the vagrants have moved to the Durban North area as a result,” Lt Naidoo said. “The recent crime operation we had proved to be a great success with the arrest of six suspected prostitutes. We’re paying serious attention to prostitution and vagrancy in the area,” added Lt Naidoo.

“Such elements have a huge impact on the community’s safety, as often prostitution and vagrancy leads to an increase of drug dealers in the area. The increase of drug dealers then has a direct impact on the crime in the area, which often increases,” he added.

Lt Naidoo urged residents to contact the police on 10111 should there be a suspicion of prostitution or vagrancy in the area.
