Domestic worker wanted for jewellery theft

Domestic worker makes off with R65 000 worth of jewellery.

DURBAN North SAPS are searching for a domestic worker who stole jewellery over a period of time from her employer’s home in La Lucia. Last year, Justicia Investigations, a private investigations agency, said that crimes committed by domestic workers were on the rise.

According to Lt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the station, the domestic worker made off with R65 000 worth of jewellery during one month before disappearing.

“Theft of items such as jewellery are often discovered well after they have occurred, as not everybody has an inventory of what they have,” he said.

Deokaran added that residents should also complete reference checks before employing anybody. “Reference checks are the most commonly-used tool for screening. How well do you know the people who are working for you?

“Residents should know the addresses of their own domestic workers. Rather than simply going by a referral, you need to interview applicants,” he said.

According to Statistics South Africa, more than one million people work as domestic workers in the country.
