More than half a million taken in house robbery

Robbers overpower women in Balmoral Drive robbery but are disturbed by police sirens.

FIVE suspects made off with half a million rand worth of items after an armed robbery on Balmoral Drive.

According to Lt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, one of the suspects was also armed with a crowbar. The robbers overpowered four women (a mother, her two daughters and a mother-in-law) who were at home at the time of the robbery on Saturday, 1 March.

“Three of the women were locked in a bathroom while the mother was taken upstairs. The men demanded valuables and made off with wedding jewellery, rings, watches, an Apple map book, an iPad and several other items amounting to R578 000. Thankfully no one was hurt during the robbery,” he said.

In another house robbery on Monday last week, two suspects tied up a domestic worker and the owner of a Fairway house with cellphone chargers. “The domestic worker was confronted by two armed men when she was hanging washing. She was forced back into the house and upstairs where the owner was. The owner was still asleep at the time and the men overpowered her and tied her up.

“A patrol vehicle’s siren interrupted the suspects who fled with cellphones and two watches. They managed to get away,” he said.

Suspect in the wrong place at the wrong time

Though the suspects managed to escape, another man was arrested after unwittingly giving himself away. The man, who was arrested for being in possession of alleged stolen items, heard the siren of the police vehicle and attempted to run despite the police not looking for him.

He was struck by a car in his attempt to flee and was taken to hospital with minor injuries. He was later taken back into police custody.
