Local park an eyesore for Riverside residents

Local resident cannot understand why the parks department inexplicably dumped sand and concrete blocks in a local park.

FRUSTRATED, annoyed and fed-up were just some of the words used by Riverside resident, Brian Daish, when describing his ongoing ordeal with the municipality.

The Browns Drift Road resident said he has been trying since November last year, to get the Parks Department to re-grass and rehabilitate a local park that has been covered in sand for months. The park which is situated on the corner of Browns Drift Road and Anthony Road is covered in layers of sand.

“I have sent countless emails and left messages for someone to call me back but to no avail. Last year, an official from the parks department, trucked in loads of soil and dumped it all over the park, on the roots of the bigger trees and for some odd reason, concrete slabs were also just dumped in the park. No explanations or plans were given.

“No grass rehabilitation has taken place as promised and it is downright unsightly. Trees have been stunted and broken by this as well,” he said.

The chairman of the Community Policing Forum (sector four Greenwood Park) said more rubbish is being dumped in the park because people think it is a rubbish dump.

In his last email response from a parks official, the department said it was working towards solving the problem. Another resident who did not want to be named said he believed the department was trying to get rid of excess sand elsewhere by dumping it in the park.

There has been no response from the Deputy Head of the Parks Department Christo Swart.
