Effingham business robbed by armed men

An Effingham Road business was robbed by three armed men on Saturday 15 February.

AN Effingham man was held up at gunpoint by two armed robbers while a third armed robber slapped him while stealing cigarettes at his Effingham supermarket. On Saturday 15 February at about 7.45pm three armed men stormed the supermarket in Effingham Road and held up the business owner.

“The complainant alleged that he was at the shop doing his normal duties. He was busy at the counter when he was approached by an unknown man who had a firearm pointed at him and demanded money,” said Lt Elvis Naidoo, spokesman for the Greenwood Park SAPS.

Lt Naidoo reported that while the victim was taking money from the tills, another man approached him, also demanding money.

“While he was talking to the two robbers, a third man removed cigarettes from the counter and also slapped the owner in his face, again demanding money,” Lt Naidoo added.

The first robber then asked the other two robbers to leave the shop: “As they left the shop the three men started randomly firing shots outside and inside the shop. The stray bullets damaged the two cash tills. The complainant didn’t witness the shooting as it occurred outside the shop.

“The suspects fled the scene. A case of business robbery is being investigated,” he said.
