Cancer can be beaten everyday

Durban North resident Sharon Van Straaten, a cancer survivor talks about what World Cancer Day means to her.

TODAY, 4 February marks World Cancer Day. World Cancer Day, is aimed at raising collective voices in the name of improving general knowledge around cancer and dismissing misconceptions about the disease. Durban North resident and the founder of Pink Phoenix Cancer Foundation, Sharon Van Straaten, a cancer survivor talks about what World Cancer Day means to her.

She is a survivor of stage 2 throat and stage 4 lymph cancer. She said she started Pink Phoenix Cancer Foundation with the purpose of one day opening a Cancer Centre that would provide support to cancer survivors on how to recognize and learn to manage the fear of cancer.

The Durban North mother said she also wanted to obtain nutritional advice and group support in order to teach people to lead full and productive lives under the threat of cancer.

“I realized that I wanted to do more than just talk about cancer survival but share my experience and that of other survivors with people who were presently fighting cancer to motivate and inspire them to believe that ‘Cancer can be beat’,” she said.

Sharon shared a profound quote with the Northglen News today:

‘Once diagnosed with Cancer…FACE it.

If you face it.. you won’t FEAR it.

If you don’t fear it…you will FIGHT it.

If you fight it…you can SURVIVE it!
