Don’t leave windows open warns SAPS

Opportunistic criminals use open window to gain access and hold up resident at knife-point.

DURBAN North SAPS has warned residents not to leave their windows open at night despite the intense heat. This after three suspects held up a La Lucia resident at knife-point on Friday 10 January. According to Lt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, the suspects gained access to the home on Old Bush Road through an open window.

“The residents were confronted by the men at about 1pm. The suspects tied them up before loading the plasma TV, laptop, watches and an iPad into the homeowners toyota, which was also stolen. The registration of the vehicle has been circulated but there has been no arrests,” he said.

Deokaran added this was not the first time criminals had gained access through an open window. “We’ve had a spate of break-ins where criminals have gained access through an open window, especially in complexes where residents felt safer,” he said.
