Madiba to be laid to rest in Qunu on December 15

President Jacob Zuma calls on South Africans to pray and reflect on Madiba’s life and his contribution to the world.

FORMER President Nelson Mandela will be laid to rest at his home, in Qunu, in the Eastern Cape, on 15 December. Briefing the media after visiting Mandela’s family in Houghton on Friday, President Jacob Zuma said as South Africa prepares for a week of mourning, Mandela’s remains will be stationed at the Union Buildings in Pretoria from 11 to 13 December.

Madiba passed on in his family home in Houghton, last night. President Zuma also announced that Sunday, 8 December, has been declared a Day of Prayer and Reflection.

On this day, the nation has been called upon to gather at all places of worship to pray and hold services and reflect on Madiba’s life and his contribution to the world. The official memorial service will take place at the FNB Stadium in Nasrec, south of Johannesburg, on 10 December.

However, during the period of mourning, several memorials will be held in all provinces and regions.

The President thanked all South Africans and Heads of State from across the world for the support they have shown to the Mandela family.
