Dance depicts new breed of men
DURBAN University of Technology's Drama and Production Studies Department presents the 2013 annual Season of Contemporary Dance entitled, Mr Mom, inspired by our modern world's fast-changing socio-economic dynamics.
The show is from 1 to 4 October at 7pm at The Courtyard Theatre in Mansfield Road.
The department is highlighting house-husbands, a new breed of men, who are redefining traditional gender roles and embracing what is largely still thought to be ‘a woman’s role’, without complaining. In fact, these men welcome the change.
This dance piece lends itself to debunking primitive social structure based largely on the physical capabilities of the two genders demanded that a man is the provider, and he should hunt and bring home the food, and woman, the nurturer, should stay at home and take care of the husband and the children.
Mr Mom involves all second and third year Theatre Dance specialists and showcases five new works by Durban based choreographers, Mdu Mtshali, Mlekeleli Khuzwayo, Vusi Makhanya and Sifiso Majola. The show is directed by dance lecturer, Mdu Mtshali.
