Volunteers tackle beach clean up

Despite the cold weather residents showed up for the beach clean-up recently.

THE International Coastal Clean up day along uMhlanga’s shoreline got underway on Saturday with the help of the Urban Improvement Precinct (UIP), local residents, school pupils and Ezemvelo KZN.

UIP project leader, Brian Wright, hailed the intrepids who blamed the cold weather on Saturday to help with the annual clean up. “Caring for our local beaches is of vital importance and it’s a way of raising awareness for environmental sustainability. Some people question what difference a yearly clean up makes, but the results speak for themselves.

Wright added most of the items picked up were made up of mainly plastic bottles, crisp packets and cans. “More than 95 per cent of this rubbish comes from the rivers and I hope for the local school who helped today, it served as an education of what damage litter has on the environment. I just want to thank everybody who gave their time to a worthy cause today and to Wakaberry who gave each participant a 20 per cent discount voucher and a bottle of water,” she said.
