Effingham family robbed and threatened

An Effingham father and his daughter were held up by balaclava-wearing criminals last week.

A FATHER and his daughter were the latest victims of a new balaclava gang hitting the Durban North area.

On Thursday 5 September an Effingham resident was watching TV when he heard a loud bang at his house.

He was met by five armed men when he went to investigate.

According to Greenwood Park SAPS spokesman, Lt Elvis Naidoo, one of the men shouted at him, pointing a firearm at him, while demanding safe keys.

The other four were loading jewellery into a pillowcase.

The robbers then locked him and his daughter in the bathroom, took alcohol from a table, stole R1 000, a TV, a cellphone and stole a white Toyota Carolla.

“It is believed the men threatened to rape the daughter and kill her,” Lt Naidoo said.

He urged residents not to keep large amounts of cash at their homes.

“If you are being held up or being attacked, keep calm. Install security cameras if you can afford it and store expensive jewellery in banks’ vaults,” Lt Naidoo said.
