Avoca learners get green by planting veggie garden

Ellan said that Green Buddies Environmental Club looked forward to collaborating with other organisations and businesses on projects such as this in creating an eco-friendly and sustainable community.

AVOCA Primary School has transformed a piece of ground into a green and leafy food garden comprised of vegetables which will be used as part of the school’s nutritional programme.

This was done in collaboration with the Green Buddies Environmental Club, learners, educators and various sponsors.

In addition to planting the garden, learners also performed poems and dances which was part of their spring celebration.

Shannil Kowlesar, principal of the school, said he was proud of the new initiative and that produce from the garden will go towards providing meals for disadvantaged learners.

“The food garden and tree-planting project will be beneficial to the school as we develop a food garden to provide meals for the disadvantaged learners. The community garden consists of vegetable seedlings planted that promote the growth of vegetables which will be used to supplement and eradicate the hunger of the learners,” said Kowlesar.

He added that environmental education is very important and that these values should be instilled from a primary school level.

Ashlin Ellan, chairperson of Green Buddies Environmental Club, said the project was initiated to promote environmental sustainability and ensure that learners learn the importance of food growing while learning about the environment.

“Hingham Nursery sponsored 13 seedlings and four bags of compost towards the event which we are most grateful for. We are also thankful to the other organisations and individuals who made this initiative possible,” said Ellan.

He added that the learners were most excited and proud of the hard work they put in to ensure that the seedlings were planted correctly. The learners were also taught how to nurture and care for the plants, as well.
