“In 2009 I was in India working for wealthy businessman and training for a World Cup at the same time…. India is hectic. There are so many animals, people and way too much litter. I didn’t know it at the time but people live on the beaches in India and there’s just piles of rubbish,” she said.

After leaving India, travelling to Hawaii and completing her first ocean race, Ferguson said she fell in love with the ocean.

She knew she had to do something to save the ocean for future generations to enjoy so she completed a world-record swim around Easter Island, which is 63.5 kilometres in circumference, continuously for a duration of 19 hours and 8 minutes.

“By 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the sea and I don’t want that for the future,” she said.
