Firwood Library receives much-needed TLC

Firwood Library has been closed for much-needed repairs because of damage caused by the April 2021 floods. It reopens on June 30.

FIRWOOD Road Library closed for renovations and infrastructure upgrades on April 12 due to damages caused by the April floods.

eThekwini Municipality spokesperson Lindiwe Lhuzwayo told Northglen News that the focus was on the cleaning of the roof, repairing damaged tiles and replacing the roof plastic to avoid leaks.

“The fencing at the back of the library will also be made a priority, as well as replacing damaged ceiling panels and cleaning the library carpet,” she said.

There will be no new equipment or facilities added.

The area’s ward councillor, Bobby Maharajh, said he was most happy to hear the good news and disseminated the information to residents as soon as he was made aware.

“I am not sure exactly what the upgrades are, but I am glad to hear that the library is finally receiving the much-needed improvement. This library has been around for a long time, and the upgrade is long overdue,” he said.

“It’s very popular among the youngsters who use it, not only to borrow books but also to read, do homework and get assistance with schoolwork. It’s the boost that the community needed. I am hoping that it is the catalyst to getting the swimming pool (Firwood Pool) repaired,” he added.

Chairman for Ward 34 Residents and Ratepayers’ Association, Andrew Akkers, said residents were happy to learn about the refurbishment, but the entire area, comprising the library and swimming pool precinct, requires a major upgrade.

“The parking lot is a hive of activity for drug peddlers. People drink there and leave their bottles in the parking lot. Residents from neighbouring homes dump their refuse in the parking area. The area is generally not safe or conducive for our children,” he said.

When the Northglen News visited the library on Friday, a regular library user, Ryan Vrayster, said he was excited that the facility was being renovated.

“I have been living in the area for about two years now and often come here to work. It’s a great facility, which needed some care, and I’m glad that it’s finally receiving it. I am also happy to see that the parking area is neat and tidy. Earlier, I saw that the police were here on patrol, as well,” he said.

In the meantime, the public can use the Durban North Library, KwaMashu Library, Glen Ashley Library, and the Newlands East Library. Alternatively, the public can visit the Central Lending Library or the Prince Edward Library. Firwood Library will open on June 30.
