Volunteers needed for North Durban operations centre

The launch of the community centre is a joint operation between the Durban North/Umhlanga and Greenwood CPFs.

THE Durban North/Umhlanga Community Policing Forum (CPF) is calling on volunteers to help with the operations of the North Durban Operations Community Centre (OCC).

The launch of the community centre is a joint operation between the Durban North/Umhlanga and Greenwood CPFs.

Haden Searles, chairperson of the Durban North/Umhlanga CPF, said the purpose of the OCC is to assist both the Durban North and Greenwood Park SAPS to function more efficiently.

“Both the SAPS and the Metro Police have endorsed this facility. We are looking for volunteers to assist in the OCC. The objective is to have the centre manned 24 hours a day. This will give the various neighbourhood watches that are registered with the two CPFs a central communications facility to monitor and assist them by liaising with the SAPS, Metro Police and the security companies that are supporting this concept.

“This facility will also provide a centralised database of incidents reported whereby hotspots and trends can be monitored and reported to the relevant authorities. The facility will also monitor camera feeds from various areas around the North Durban area, assisting CPF, neighbourhood watch patrollers, SAPS and Metro with proactive community policing,” Searles said.

Searles emphasised that anybody who volunteers to be part of the OCC team will need to become a member of the relevant CPF in the area in which they reside.
