Durban man shares lifesaving life story on World Kidney Day

The day is aimed at raising awareness of the importance of our kidneys and to encourage transplantation.

IN February this year, Deven Naidu celebrated his 11th anniversary since receiving a lifesaving kidney transplant from his wife, Raveena.

The Mount Edgecombe resident has been using his story to inspire others to consider being an organ donor, especially as the world celebrates World Kidney Day on March 9.

The day is a global campaign aimed at raising awareness of the importance of our kidneys.

Deven was diagnosed with kidney failure in 2011 and was placed on dialysis for a year.

“A typical day would start with me battling to get out of bed because I was tired all the time. I could no longer play sport and never got to spend time with my family due to fatigue. I was on dialysis for a year, and that also took a lot out of me. After sessions, I would feel drained. At one stage, I even needed crutches to walk,” he said.

When his wife suggested becoming a living organ donor, Deven was reluctant at first.

“My wife saved my life – there are no two ways about it. I think part of the reason for World Kidney Day, aside from encouraging ways to protect your kidneys, is also a way to encourage transplantation as the best option for kidney failure. I have been given my second chance, and my wife has definitely given me a new lease on life.

“I think it’s also a way to show others that once you get your transplant, you can live a healthy and active lifestyle. Registering to become an organ donor is really as simple as saving someone’s life. I now use my life story to inspire others and raise awareness on kidneys and transplants,” he said.

Deven said the best way to find out how you can help is to visit the Organ Donor Foundation website (ODF).
