Here are some expert tips from the makeup professional:

Question: What are some common makeup mistakes that makeup beginners should avoid?

Answer:

  • Selecting a foundation that suits the face and not the body tone. Always swatch a tester from the jawline onto the neck and see if it blends in.  It should disappear into the skin.  Too light or too dark will be very obvious.
  • The wrong foundation colour and type can result in very obvious unnatural mask-like skin effects.  Avoid using powder foundations if you have dry skin – they preferably should only be used for skin younger than 40.
  • Don’t over-line the eye or eyebrow with pencil liner.  Rather use a small brush and dark brown shadow to fill in the brow and define the eye for natural day looks.

Question: What makeup trend/s do you think should be left in 2022?

Answer:

  • Over-highlighting – this actually results in a harsh reflection on the skin and can enhance uneven/mature skin.
  • Over-defining eyebrows – although the return to a fuller brow was a great trend, over-enhancing a bushy brow does not suit everyone and can distract from the eye and cheekbone.

Question: What are some popular trends that you think should be adopted by makeup enthusiasts in 2023?

Answer:

  • Now that Covid masks are a thing of the past, the lip is, once again, the focus.  Using a skin-toned lipliner to enhance the mouth shape is a definite.  Use a cotton bud and buff the liner into the lipliner to avoid a hard shape.  Add a little highlighter onto the cupid’s bow for an instant lift.
  • Mixing a bronzer into your foundation.  This will result in a soft glow on the skin giving an instant radiance.

Question: Are there any makeup hacks that you can share for beginners?

Answer:

  • If you are battling with eyeshadow spilling onto your cheekbone, apply a very light dusting of face powder onto this area.  Once you have blended all eyeshadow, use a large powder brush coated in face powder and buff all excess powder and shadow off the cheek area.
  • Always blend excess foundation/concealer off the eyelid and under the eye before using a small powder brush and dusting face powder over those areas.  This will ensure that no creasing under the eye occurs and will also help set the eyeshadow in place.
