Armed gang ties up residents in Effingham robbery

Two vehicles that were also stolen in the robbery were later recovered by law enforcement.

AN armed gang of five suspects held up and robbed an Effingham family on Popatlall Place just after 11:20 on Wednesday morning.

The suspects tied up the residents who were home at the time and stole several items of value, including two vehicles, both of which were later successfully recovered.

Marshall Security spokesperson Tyron Powell confirmed that the suspects were armed with knives and firearms.

“When we arrived on scene, our Special Operations Team managed to gain access into the house and free the victims who were tied up. It was also established that two vehicles, a black Nissan Almera and a white Hyundai i10 were taken, together with various other items of value, including cash and jewellery.

“Our members set out to monitor neighbouring areas, and an hour after being alerted to the house robbery, the Nissan was found abandoned in KwaMashu K-Section, where it was recovered by members of our Special Ops Team, together with the assistance of Greenwood Park Trio Crimes Unit. The Hyundai i10 was found approximately half an hour later, also abandoned in KwaMashu K-Section, where the suspects had crashed the vehicle,” Powell said.

Greenwood Park SAPS and the station’s Trio Crimes Unit are investigating the incident.
