New dates for 2023 edition of aQuellé Tour Durban

The iconic Durban cycling event makes a return to its familiar autumn date.

THE popular aQuellé Tour Durban cycle races make a welcome return to their traditional autumn slot in the 2023 calendar. This as the organisers confirmed that the aQuellé Tour Durban road races will be held on Sunday, May 14 and the aQuellé Tour Durban mountain bike rides will be presented by CycleLab on Saturday, May 13.

Into its 30th edition, the iconic Durban cycling event makes a return to its familiar autumn date, after it was staged as a virtual event following its Covid-enforced cancellation in 2020. It was then moved to November in 2021 to escape the grips of the pandemic and was held in September in 2022.

“There are a great deal of role-players involved in the organisation of the aQuellé Tour Durban, and it has been interesting to be responsible for putting on the events during the last few years,” said race director Alec Lenferna. “We are excited to be able to get the race back to the autumn time frame that many of its supporters are familiar with.”

Lenferna said the passion for the event, from its beneficiary The Domino Foundation, the broader cycling community and especially the sponsors, had carried the event through the challenges of the last three years, and he said that he was confident that the event returning to its autumn time period will resonate with the road riders and mountain-bikers that have been loyal supporters of the event.

“The race has always been a Ride4Good as everyday people who love to ride their bikes in a safe, secure and fun environment get together to do what they love in support of The Domino Foundation,” he said.

Lenferna said that more details will be finalised regarding the routes and formats for the mountain bike rides and the road races in the coming weeks, and that entries would open in February.
