PinkDrive raises cancer awareness at Oscar themed event

The aim of the initiative was to raise awareness about cancer and to also raise funds for a new cancer machine.

GLITZ and glamour were the order of the day at this Year’s PinkDrive which was held at Northlands Girls’ High School.

The cancer awareness drive, themed ‘PinkDrive at the Oscars’, saw attendees dressed in true ‘Hollywood’ style come out in their numbers in support of the initiative.

Janice, a member of PinkDrive and a cancer survivor herself, says that the aim of the initiative was to raise awareness about cancer and to also raise funds for a new cancer machine.

“PinkDrive is a cancer organisation that believes that early detection will prolong our lives and that prevention is better than cure. If we can get a 100 000 readers to go on to our website and donate R30, we will have our R3 500 000 that we need to make a new machine. People can have us over if they are a corporate, to provide breast examinations and education, or if they want mammograms, or whatever it is that they want done,” Benecke said.

“For the general public, they can have high teas, they can do car washes, cake sales, or whatever it is to raise funds for the organisation because we can’t do these services without sponsorship.“

Asked what inspired the theme, Janice said that she received phone calls from attendees saying they needed to dress up for the fundraiser.

“I got phone calls from a few people saying we need to dress up and what better way than the Oscars. We are also doing this in memory of my beloved friend and volunteer for PinkDrive, Nelly Tait, who sadly passed away on September 30. She did so much work to make this high tea a success,” she said.

Janice stressed the importance of doing breast examinations to check for cancer.

“I would like to tell everybody that they need to do a breast examination every month, seven days after they’ve had their period. It’s so important that if you find anything, you get yourself checked,” she said.
