Durban cyclists tackle ride to raise funds for St Theresa’s Children’s Home

The team of 16 cyclists will be riding from Johannesburg to Durban over seven days in what has been dubbed the Jozi2Sea Cycle Tour.

A GROUP of cyclists from around Durban have united to raise funds for the St Theresa’s Children’s Home in Sydenham.

The team of 16 cyclists will be riding from Johannesburg to Durban over seven days in what has been dubbed the Jozi2Sea Cycle Tour.

Barry Porter, who initiated the cycle journey, said they will cover a distance of more than 600km and had set themselves the target of raising R120 000 for the home.

“St Theresa’s provides residential care for children up to the age of 18 years that are orphaned and vulnerable,” explained Porter. “Initially, it was a challenge that my son, son-in-law and daughter were going to embark on.

“When a few of my friends from the East Coast Cycling Club and surrounds heard about it, they decided to join in. It just escalated from there to the point that we had this group of 16 riders. We are just ordinary people hoping to make a difference in a home that has done so much for the community,” he said.

Durban North resident Linga Naidoo said that initially the group aimed to raise R50 000 but soon surpassed that target.

“The support from all those who donated has been monumental. We surpassed the R50 000 mark and then set it at R70 000 which we’ve also surpassed. We have now settled on R120 000, but we hope to surpass that target, too. We’d just like to thank our friends, sponsors and all those who donated for this wonderful home. A cycle tour of this magnitude would also not be possible without the support of our families,” he said.
