Mommy moments: It’s the final countdown

In four weeks’ time, Caxton journalist Candyce Krishna will welcome her sweet bundle of pink to the world.

I ALWAYS look forward to my antenatal checkups, and prior to them, I try to guess my baby’s weight, height, and how much she’s grown since my last visit.

To see her moving and kicking on the ultrasound gives me butterflies and even more so as the gynae explains which of her body parts are where, because let’s face it, if he didn’t explain, I would have no idea as the ultrasound really needs a trained professional to take you through it!

At my first few checkups, he would point to what looked like some sort of object to me and say, “Here’s her hand – can you see it?” I would just reply, “Yes,” but honestly, it didn’t look like a hand to me at all. I know millions of other moms will relate.

This time, I got to see her tiny fingers, legs, hands, tummy and heart beating. They’re not as tiny as they first were, and it struck me that I only have four weeks left to enjoy my pregnancy.

I’ve been through this twice before, and it’s still the most spectacular thing I’ve ever experienced in my life – growing a life inside me, that is.

Since munchies’ arrival date is around the corner, this visit and my next one, which will be my last, are all about preparing for the birth of my daughter. I can’t believe I’m going to be a mum of three girls, but I am pretty sure my bank balance will give me a swift reality check!

As much as I am at the stage where I am uncomfortable, fatigued and emotional and can’t wait to give my baby an eviction notice, I will miss being pregnant. We women are sometimes weird, I know.

Moms always talk about skin-to-skin contact after birth or breastfeeding being such a great bonding process, and they are, but I believe the bonding starts from the day of conception and only gets stronger with every kick, punch and roll, even if it’s straight to your rib or right on your bladder.

So, other than preparing for my little girl, these last four weeks of my pregnancy, I will do nothing else but treasure the time I have left with my baby still in my womb.
