Cosplayer ready for Comic Con Africa appearance

Justin Walter has been one of the standouts at previous cons and has brought several fictional characters to life including Groot and Batman.

WITH just weeks to go this year’s Comic Con Africa, Durban North resident and cosplay enthusiast, Justin Walter is looking forward to showcasing one of his cosplay creations at the event.

Walter has been one of the standouts at previous cons and has brought several fictional characters to life including Groot (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Arthas Menethil (Warcraft) in painstakingly accurate detail.

He has also created, Korg (Thor), a Batman (Batman Vs Superman) iron suit, Maui (Moana) and Ash Ketchum (Pokémon) cosplay complete with various Pokémon creatures including Togepi, Butterfree, Psyduck and Geodude.

The 38-year-old uses ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) foam which helps form the body of many of his characters.

WIN: Comic Con tickets up for grabs ahead of four-day fest

Walter said he was thrilled to be returning to this year’s Con after a two year absence due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“I’m absolutely looking forward to the event! The last big con event was back in September 2019. Even though Cape Town had a smaller pop-up Comic Con event last October we haven’t had an event of this scale for two years. It’s going to be monumental. I love the vibe, the stalls and brushing shoulders with like-minded people who share the same great love of geek culture, and of course the Cosplay,” he said.

One of his favourite creations that has elicited the most excitement on his Instagram is his Korg cosplay.

Walter spent 150 hours building the outfit, Korg’s weapon and his sidekick and friend, Miek an insectoid warrior

“I think in the virtual world and on social media, Korg is the favorite but at a real life con Prince Arthas from World of Warcraft received great reactions at CCA 2019. There’s nothing brand new but I will be debuting Korg for the first time at a live public event. I’m also looking at doing a variation of my Arthas cosplay and potentially a new friend for my Brock Pokémon cosplay.” he said.
