Ward councillor confirms eThekwini excluded from load-shedding Stages 1 to 3

The rolling blackouts will only effect eThekwini from Stage 4 and upwards.

UMHLANGA ward councillor Nicole Bollman has confirmed that eThewkini will be excluded from load-shedding Stages 1 to 3.

The region has been spared from load-shedding in recent months after the widespread damage to the electrical grid during the floods in April and May.

The municipality said it would be included in the national load-shedding grid from 1 August, but Bollman said the rolling blackouts would only affect eThekwini from Stage 4 and upwards.

“I received a number of queries yesterday as residents were apprehensive about the fact that eThekwini has been included in the national load-shedding grid as of August 1. We will only be included should Eskom increase the shed to Stages 4 and above. Stages 1-3 will not affect us. I do urge residents to still prepare for the event by ensuring their emergency lights are fully charged,” she said.

Last month, spokesperson for the municipality Msawakhe Mayisela confirmed that eThekwini had prepared a temporary load-shedding schedule that will be effective for Stages 4 and higher.

Mayisela added that the municipality and Eskom are in continuous engagement to avert any further risks to the city’s electrical grid.
