RESIDENTS of Effingham have decried an ongoing sewage leak on Paruks Drive, calling it a health hazard.
For several weeks now, residents say raw sewage has flown down their road and into a nearby bush, causing a big stink.
A resident, who wanted to remain anonymous, said the flow of waste water increases every morning and afternoon.

“I have to hose down my driveway and the tyres of my car because I have to drive over the sewage leak to access my driveway. The smell is terrible, and we all keep our windows closed on a daily basis. We’ve also noticed an increase in flies, and despite contacting the eThekwini Municipality with reference numbers, nothing has been fixed. This is a health hazard to us as residents but also to the environment,” he said.
The sewage leak has now begun to flow down to Prince Mhlangana Road.
Ward councillor for the area, Bobby Maharajh, said the leak is flowing over the above-ground sewerage pipe that was recently repaired.
“Initially, residents thought the newly repaired pipe had sprung a leak. However, we’ve traced the leak back to the source on Paruks Drive. I must agree with the residents as this is a health hazard. There is obviously some type of blockage causing this leak, and residents are bearing the brunt of this without any tangible action taken to fix it. This is one of a number of sewage leaks in the area that require urgent attention,” he said.
