RESIDENTS of Milldene Park Retirement Village recently honoured The Queen with a regal assortment of cakes and puddings for a cake-and-pudding competition.
While a sweet tooth was the order of the day, the residents also showed a generosity of spirit, with all funds raised from the sale of the delicious bakes going towards the Gift of the Givers Foundation.
The competition was also a way to highlight the upcoming Platinum Jubilee celebrations to mark The Queen’s years of service.
Sylvia Garvie, one of the organisers of the event, said she was thrilled with the response from the residents.
“This is all in honour of The Queen, to mark her 70 years of service, and all of us here today adore the royal family. The idea was to create a cake or pudding linked to the celebrations. I made a Jubilee Jelly, with the colours of the Union Jack. I must say I was impressed with the array of cakes and puddings on the tables. In all, we had 20 items for judging, and we also sold them, with funds going towards the Gift of the Givers Foundation,” Garvie said.
Joan van Kan, another resident of the village, echoed Garvie’s sentiments.
“This is all in the name of fun, and while there are thousands of events planned to celebrate Her Majesty, we felt we could add to the celebrations from our retirement village. Another consideration for me was to donate and support the Gift of the Givers Foundation for the amazing work they do,” Van Kan said.
