LISTEN: Project to repair damaged infrastructure in uMdloti to take four months

WORK to repair damaged infrastructure in uMdloti from this weekend’s heavy rains will take approximately four months to complete.

This was revealed on Wednesday by eThekwini Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda when he addressed members of the media and concerned residents on Bellamont Road.

Part of the work that will be undertaken by the contractors includes the installation of two larger diameter pipes from Bellamont Road to uMdloti Beach in order to prevent mudslides that cause severe damage to properties.

Senior manager for stormwater and design, Greg Williams, also spoke to residents about the scope of the work.

Mayor Kaunda urged residents to be patient as construction work is likely to continue for months.

“The project will take approximately four months to complete, and we want to appeal to residents to bear with us as there will be a lot of disruption as contractors begin their work. We are confident that once all of this is done, the northern parts of uMdloti will be safer,” Kaunda explained.

“Our engineers have discovered that sand build-up on Bellamont Road had caused water to cross from one side to the other, and this caused damage to properties. However, with the Municipality installing these two high-density polyethylene pipes with inlets on both sides, water coming from the nearby forest will be channelled to the sea to prevent future damages to nearby properties and municipal infrastructure,” he said.

He added that the Municipality is also working round the clock to fix the damage on the uMdloti water-treatment plant.
