Support group formed for Alzheimer carers in Durban North
Local resident, Sylvia Garvie, through the Durban North Methodist Church, said the support group meets on a monthly basis and is open to anyone.
A LOCAL resident has started a Durban North Support Group for carers and family members who are caring for a loved one living with dementia and Alzheimer’s.
Alzheimer’s disease is a brain disorder that affects memory, thinking and behaviour.
Local resident, Sylvia Garvie, through the Durban North Methodist Church, said the support group meets on a monthly basis and is open to anyone.
Garvie, who lives in a retirement village, said there are currently 10 people in the group.

“There are several benefits of participating in support groups: you feel less lonely, isolated or judged, and you improve your coping skills. We talk openly and honestly about our feelings and the challenges of caring for someone with Alzheimer’s disease. So many of those who are already part of our group say it has helped reduced their fatigue and anxiety,” she said.
Garvie added that it was important to get practical advice or information about treatment options.
“Through these support group meetings, we compare notes about resources, doctors and alternative options. That makes it easier as you get different ideas,” she said.
The support group meets on the last Wednesday of every month at 10am at the Durban North Methodist Church, 3 Swapo Road. The next meeting takes place on Wednesday, May 25.
