North Durban residents gear up for charity swim

Six swimmers will swim from uMhlanga to DUC in May to raise funds for the Sinakekele Children's home in Verulam.

A GROUP of swimmers are set to tackle a charity swim from uMhlanga to Durban Undersea Club (DUC) for a young boy with cerebral palsy from the Sinakekele Children’s home.

Sinakekele, situated in Verulam, is a transition home for abandoned babies.

Northglen News recently caught up with Durban North resident, Craig Stuart, Mount Edgecombe resident, Chris Shipley, and uMhlanga resident Matt Sutherland to find out more about their charitable swim set for the month of May.

Stuart explained his personal connection to home having adopted his youngest son from there.

“I’ve witnessed first-hand the incredible work the staff do for the young children at the home. One of them in particular, who goes by the name Determined Mr D was diagnosed with cerebral palsy from a young age. We have always wanted to do a long distance swim like this and we felt what better way to do that than by giving back in the process. The youngster needs help for a push trolley and other items and all funds raised from this event will go directly to the home,” Stuart explained.

In all, there will be six swimmers involved in the open water swim which is approximately 17 kilometres and Stuart hopes that they will have runners join them on the route as well.

“The swim is weather dependent but we have given ourselves a two weekend window period in May. We are all mildly talented swimmers and we felt why not put our skills to good use. Joining us on the day will be Troy Mayers, Marcelle Stiemens and Ryan Redman. We will also have a surfski and a motor boat as part of our support crew. The swim should take us between five and six hours to complete. Our philosophy is really to have fun while doing good for Sinakekele Children,” he said.

Sutherland echoed Stuart’s words

“The concept of doing good and giving back is something that has always attracted us. We are living in harsh times and KZN particularly has been through a lot in recent years. We are keeping a positive mindset and this swim is not only about challenging ourselves but raising as much as possible for Sinakekele Children and raising awareness on the work they do,” Sutherland said.
