KZN Floods: Domestic worker’s body recovered in Durban North after nine days

The woman's body was recovered on Wednesday afternoon by rescue workers.

SEARCH and Rescue personnel have recovered the body of a domestic worker who was trapped under a wall of rubble for nine days.

SAPS K9 and Metro Search and Rescue teams recovered the body on Wednesday evening after a call for help from Gift of the Givers for a Bobcat to help with rescue efforts.

Tyron Powell, spokesperson for Marshall Security said they were called out in the early hours of Tuesday (April 12) last week when a retainer wall collapsed on the woman’s Wendy hut following heavy rains.

“At the time the heavy rains hampered rescue operations and the main home on Portland Crescent had to be evacuated. The retainer wall and the subsequent bank collapse made conditions unsafe. Search and rescue worked extensively to dig through the rubble and on Wednesday afternoon her body was recovered,” Powell said.

Powell also expressed his sadness over the incident.

“We would like to offer our condolences to her family and friends and all those involved in this tragedy,” he said.

The KZN Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) said the death toll across the province now stands at 448 from the floods.
