E-hailing driver hijacked, left in Durban North

The vehicle was found abandoned near an informal settlement in Durban North.

WHAT seemed like a usual pick up for an e-hailing service driver, turned into a nightmare when his customers turned out to be hijackers who were pretending to need a ride.

The incident played out in Redhill on Tuesday night and came to an end with the vehicle being abandoned near the Malacca Road Informal Settlement in Durban North later on.

“Armed response officers responded to the last known location of the hijacked vehicle and managed to recover the vehicle within 10 minutes from being activated,” said Marshall Security spokesperson Tyron Powell.

The recovery was done in conjunction with the Matrix ground team and Metro Police.

It was later established that after the driver collected what he thought were his passengers from their location in Durban central, one of them produced a firearm and demanded that he stop his vehicle.

“The men then forcefully took the vehicle from him and dropped him off on Kenneth Kaunda Road in the Durban North area,” said Powell.

“He eventually managed to find assistance to activate the tracking device in his vehicle,” he added.

A case of hijacking was opened at Durban Central Police Station.
