E.coli levels in uMngeni River still ‘unacceptably high’

Janet Simpkins, the founder and director of non-profit organisation (NPO), Adopt-a-River, said she still remains concerned over the health of the river.

FOR months, conservationists have raised the alarm over the health of the uMngeni River.

While extremely high levels of E.coli found in the river pose a threat to those who use the river on a daily basis, those who monitor the health of the river, also raised the alarm over a murky black discharge.

The discolouration is still visible and flowing out of the Northern Waste Water Treatment Works outfall pipe.

The City then advised that recreational activities on the uMngeni River and the uMhlangane tributary were not recommended.

Janet Simpkins, the founder and director of non-profit organisation (NPO), Adopt-a-River, said she still remains concerned over the health of the river.

“We know this river is still polluted and unsafe for all to use. We regularly test the water quality at various points of the uMngeni River and the situation is still critical. According to our tests, the E.coli levels are still unacceptably high. We’ve found consistently poor water quality is status quo.

“We’ve also visited the outfall pipe and the murky substance still flowing out. We continue to engage on certain ongoing issues with the eThekwini Municipality but we are not any closer to an immediate cessation of these major pollution points,” Simpkins said.
