Man charged for opening false case of car theft in Glenashley

The vehicle was located within two days of it being reported stolen.

DURBAN North police have charged a man for defeating the ends of justice after he opened a false case of car theft.

The man, believed to be a local resident, claimed that his car had been stolen in Glenashley, explained the spokesperson for Durban North SAPS, Captain Raymond Deokaran.

“A detective was assigned to the case and, within a few days, the car was located on Ashley Avenue at a service station. The alleged victim of the car theft was called out to the site and he positively identified his vehicle. After follow-up interviews, and reviewing CCTV footage, we realised something was amiss as there was no forced entry into the vehicle.

“The man then confessed to police that he had forgotten where he had parked his vehicle and had taken an e-hailing taxi home. He then reported that his vehicle had been stolen to Durban North SAPS. After we corroborated his statement, he was charged with defeating the ends of justice,” he said.

Deokaran urged residents not to waste police manpower or resources.

“We are urging residents not to open false cases because they will be caught and prosecuted. We don’t take these cases lightly, and you will be prosecuted for wasting police resources,” he said.
