Virginia Airport operators to oppose evictions

Operators say they feel the City are trying to shut down Virginia Airport.

VIRGINIA Airport operators say they plan to oppose eviction notices served to them by eThekwini Municipality.

In a post, widely shared on social media, several tenants (not all) were served with eviction notices saying a lease agreement had lapsed and they needed to vacate the premises by February 28.

Glen Anil resident, Daryl Mann, who has more than 45 years of experience in the aviation industry, says operators plan to go to court over the order.

Mann is one of a few businessmen who has led the legal fight for long-term leases on behalf of Virginia operators.

“This just shows a lack of foresight in that there has been no consultation. The only form of communication is through the newspapers which is infuriating. The way to help general aviation is to support, invest and improve it, not get rid of tenants from Virginia Airport,” he said.

“My consensus is the City is killing Virginia Airport and with it, general aviation. The emphasis now should be taken off what could possibly happen to the site until such time as a suitable alternate has been found, and I don’t think there is a suitable alternate site. Until such a time there is a viable option then you can discuss what to do with the site. All we would like from the City is security of tenure,” Mann said.

The eThekwini Municipality failed to comment by the time of going to print.

Last year the City said it plans to develop the precinct into a mixed-use city precinct which would include residential units, hospitality and tourism related offerings.
