High Court rules Department of Basic Education should publish matric results

The Department of Basic Education did not oppose the application.

THE North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria has ruled that matric results should be published in newspapers and on social media platforms.

This comes after the non-profit civil rights organisation, AfriForum, and Moroela Media, applied to the high court to have the 2021 matric results made available on public platforms.

Last week, the Department of Basic Education announced that matric results would not be published.

A press release, issued by AfriForum earlier today, said the non-profit civil rights organisation welcomed the court ruling made by Judge Millar.

“It is in the public interest that this information is shared on public platforms and that is one of the reasons why we brought this application. We are delighted that the court agreed with us in this argument,” said the manager of education rights at AfriForum, Natasha Venter.

She added the organisation was confident the matric results could be published on Thursday, January 20.

“Former matriculants will be able to get their results in the newspapers and on media platforms,” said Venter.

The Department of Basic Education was contacted for comment, but no comment was given at the time of publication.
