GALLERY: North Durban paddlers enjoy first surfski race of season

The seven-race series is widely regarded as the kick-starter to the surfski paddling calendar in the province.

UMHLANGA resident, Matt Bouman and Glen Anil resident, Michelle Burn secured victory in the Chalupsky Properties Surfski Series on Friday.

The seven-race series is widely regarded as the kick-starter to the surfski paddling calendar in the province.

Paddlers from all over Durban enjoyed mellow conditions at the race.

In the women’s race, Burn had to compose herself before the start after getting a bluebottle wrapped around her arm during her short warm-up paddle.

“The gland on my arm was pretty sore and swollen even before we started the race. Luckily once we got going the adrenaline started pumping and I started to feel okay and eventually it went away,” said the current world champion.

“The conditions were pretty mellow with a bit of a bump in all directions. I really enjoyed the fact that we started all the singles in one bunch so that I could race against the guys. It was really cool racing and it was so good to get back into things,” she said.

The Short Course race was won by Durban North residents, Billy and Henry Harker.

Local residents, Jacqui De Billot and Lande Williamson completed the results sheet as the only two Stand Up Paddleboarder finishers.
