uMhlanga security trust tackles illegal dumping with clean-up

Some roads in upper uMhlanga have been used for illegal dumping of garden refuse and building rubble.

IN recent years, illegal dumping has plagued the communities of Upper uMhlanga.

That’s where Sylvan Grove resident, Praveshni Harkhu, comes in.

As the new trustee for the non-profit organisation (NPO), Upper Umhlanga Security Trust (UUST), Harkhu and members of the community tackled problem areas where illegal dumping had taken place.

Under her portfolio of cleaning and greening, Harkhu took on various community outreach programmes to raise funds and drum up support for the clean-ups.

“Part of the outreach programme involved the sale of cupcakes, and other initiatives, where a total of R15 530 was raised. The community contributed an additional R1 500 for the clean-up. It truly surpassed my expectations. I knew we had a number of hotspot areas in Upper uMhlanga we focused on. In recent years, illegal dumping, be it building rubble, garden refuse or just rubbish, we’ve seen a proliferation of it,” she explained.

Harkhu and volunteers helped clean up Herrwood Drive, Sylvan Grove, Campbell Drive, Kingston Place and Portland Drive.

“The volunteers and workforce on the day wore UUST branded T-shirts. I really wanted the community to know that we are proactive and focus on more than just security. The feedback we received was very positive, which was encouraging,” Harkhu said.
