WATCH: All aboard the Umgeni Steam Train

Northglen News journalist, Candyce Krishna shares her experience on board the iconic steam train.

IF there’s something I could do repeatedly and never get tired of, it would be to ride the Umgeni Steam Train.

I’ve done the round trip from Kloof to Inchanga twice, so far. It was the people I met during each trip that ensured each experience was worlds apart.

Journalist, Candyce Krishna is ready to board the Umgeni Steam Train at the Inchanga Craft Market.

Departing from Stoker’s Arms on the last Sunday of every month, unless otherwise stated, the 83-year-old Wesley will take you on a scenic trip through the Valley of 1000 Hills before it comes to a firm stop at the Inchanga Railway Station, where you will find a bustling craft market.

The Inchanga Craft Market has something for everyone as there’s lots to browse and buy, from arts and crafts to chip and dip, coffee, shwarmas, burgers, bunny chows, breyani and more.

The mini donuts, dunked in chocolate, were an absolute hit, as was the gigantic, fully-loaded beef burger.

This delicious beef burger is a must.

In addition to the interesting people I met along the trip, what I was most impressed by was learning about the deep history of the train.

While on board, a volunteer gives a detailed explanation about Wesley. Yes, you read right, the whole operation is run by a group of volunteers, male and female, young and old, each with a deep passion for trains and history.

So, if you and your family are looking for something to do, here are the upcoming dates for January:

Wesley, will be taking a well-deserved ‘break’ but will resume his ‘choo choo’ duties on January 8.

January 2 2022: 08:30/12:30 (diesel).
January 8 2022: 08:30/12:30 (steam).
January 9 2022: 08:30/12:30 (steam).

The cost is R290 per adult, while pensioners (+60) and children (2-12 years) are charged R200 each.
A family package of two adults and two children costs R880.

Booking is essential. Book online at https://umgenisteamrailway.com/
