Clinic established after Cornubia chemical spill
The eThekiwni Municipality said the clinic will not issue any medication.
AN occupational health clinic, to monitor public health, has been set-up at the uMdloti Clinic.
The United Phosphorus Limited (UPL) warehouse in Cornubia was set on fire in July, which led to an environmental disaster and the closure of several beaches.
The eThekwini municipality’s spokesperson, Msawakhe Mayisela said the clinic was established after a directive was issued by the provincial government.

“The directive was for UPL to provide an occupational health facility to deal with health impacts caused by the incident which released toxic fumes into the environment. The operation of the facility is fully funded by UPL, but it is overseen by the eThekwini Municipality and the Department of Health. It will be available for as long as it is required by impacted communities.
“The City has provided UPL with a facility at the uMdloti Clinic to provide health services to affected communities. It will be available on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 07:30 to 16:00 and on Saturdays from 08:00 to 12:00. These days will be solely for the screening and monitoring of health issues relating to the UPL fire,” he said.
Mayisela added that escalation facilities for specialist referrals will be available if required.
“The new service will not impact on the current primary health service offered at the uMdloti Clinic,” he said.
