Closure of Hyper by the Sea Post Office frustrates residents

The post office has been based at the Pick 'n Pay Hyper in Durban North for more than 10 years and traded for the last time last week (November 23).

RESIDENTS have expressed their frustration and sadness over the closure of the popular Hyper by the Sea Post Office.

The post office has been based at the Pick ‘n Pay Hyper in Durban North for more than 10 years and traded for the last time last week (November 23).

Speaking to Northglen News, Anna Accolla said the closure will negatively impact the area and put additional strain on the smaller post offices in the area.

“It was so convenient using this post office. For me, coming to Pick n Pay Hyper was like visiting a miniature mall. It was a one-stop shop: I could get a bite to eat, shop and visit the post office, but this is a massive loss for the area. There’s always been ample parking space and, when you compare that with the Durban North Post Office, which only has six, it’s ridiculous. It does make it more difficult for residents now in need of the services offered by the post office,” she said.

Durban North resident, Heidi Hill, raised similar concerns.

“I shudder to think how this will affect the north Durban community and others who relied on the Hyper by the Sea Post Office. It’s a real pity because so many people relied on its service. Where are people going to park if they use the post offices in Durban North or Redhill? The Durban North Post Office on St Andrews Drive often has long queues that also take up parking space, making it difficult to get in at an already busy business precinct,” Hill said.

South African Post Office (Sapo) spokesperson, Johan Kruger said customers were notified with a letter in their postboxes stating operations have moved to the Durban North branch.

“The lease on the premises expired at the end of November and was not renewed. No employees lose their jobs if a post office merges with another branch, or is closed. The employees and equipment are deployed in the surrounding branches to make sure service levels remain acceptable. The Durban North Post Office offers car licence renewals, and other nearby post offices are Durban Central, Redhill and Phoenix,” he said.
