Effingham resident hijacked by armed suspects

Swift Private Security confirmed that the four suspects were armed with handguns.

FOUR suspects, armed with handguns, hijacked an Effingham Road resident on Monday afternoon just after 16:00.

Sanveer Sooklall, spokesperson of Swift Private Security, said the resident was unharmed in the incident.

“The armed suspects approached him (the resident) as he arrived home and demanded the keys of his vehicle, at gunpoint. The suspects then fled the scene in his white Isuzu 250 bakkie, with NPS number plates. Fortunately, the victim was not harmed during this ordeal,” he said.

Sooklall added there had been a spike in crime in recent weeks.

Just two days prior to the hijacking, security officers responded to a shooting incident on Deepdale Avenue in Avoca.

The resident was walking home when he was approached by two armed suspects who demanded for his belongings, at gunpoint. The resident fought off the suspects, who retaliated and shot the resident in the leg. They (the suspects) then fled the scene on foot,” Sooklall said.
