Durban North statue refurbished by Our Lady of Fatima staff

The concrete statue was first brought to the convent and school when it was established in 1954.

FOR the past 67 years, the iconic statue of Mary has served as a landmark for the Durban North community.

The statue, situated outside Our Lady of Fatima Dominican Convent School, was first brought from Italy in 1954 and has been under the care of staff at the school.

The statue was recently refurbished and has now been encased in a heavy-duty acrylic casing. Ruth Florence, the HOD of Religious Education at the school, said the statue was also repainted and touched up.

“Our Lady has always been a landmark or marker for residents in the area, especially on Kenneth Kaunda (Northway) Road. The concrete statue was first brought to the convent and school when it was established in 1954. This is the second time that she has been refurbished. She was refurbished by one of our staff members and repainted and placed in a heavy duty acrylic casing to further protect her from the elements.

“I’ve been with the school for the past 17 years and I’ve always loved the beauty and intricate work of the statue of Our Lady. We’ve had numerous people comment and say they were pleased with her refurbishment. We hope the casing will protect her as, prior to this, the wind and rain constantly weathered her statue,” Florence said.
