New turn signal for busy Umhlanga Rocks Drive intersection

The news has been welcomed by ward councillor Nicole Bollman, who said the project was a longtime coming.

AFTER a few accidents and several close calls, the City has installed new turn signals at the intersection of Umhlanga Rocks Drive, Westridge Road and Guilford Avenue.

Prior to this, motorists who tried to turn right into Westridge Road and Guilford Avenue needed to run a gauntlet to cross the busy intersection.

The news has been welcomed by ward councillor Nicole Bollman, who said the project was a longtime coming.

“Anyone who uses this road knows how high the volume of traffic between uMhlanga Ridge and uMhlanga village is. We’ve seen a number of accidents over the years at this particular intersection, mainly because there was no turn signal allowing motorists to access the Umhlanga Manors or Westridge Road. Initially, the request to have turn signals installed was rejected, but the City revisited that decision after a study on the volumes of traffic turning into either of the roads mentioned.

“Residents and motorists using the road will notice a little antenna-like sensor on top of the traffic lights that detects if a queue (minimum of one car on the turning lane) is backed up. With the minimum vehicles are detected, both sides of Umhlanga Rocks Drive is activated,”

Bollman said. She fielded a number of queries from residents about the possible upgrade of roads in uMhlanga.

“I’m still awaiting more details, but I have been told that Herrwood Drive and sections of Umhlanga Rocks Drive are due for upgrade. They are also set to be made wider to deal with the high volume of traffic in and out of uMhlanga,” she said.
